Numbers 7:89

And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.

Reflection

Numbers 7:89 offers a remarkable glimpse into the intimacy of God’s communication with Moses. After the detailed offerings of the tribes, the focus shifts to the heart of Israel’s worship—the tabernacle. Moses enters not to perform a ritual, but to speak with God, and God responds. The voice comes from the mercy seat, the place of atonement and divine presence, showing that God’s guidance flows from mercy, not distance.

This verse reveals that the God of Israel is not silent or remote. He dwells among His people and speaks clearly to those He calls into His presence.

What the Verse Declares

“When Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him”
Moses approaches God intentionally. Communication with God is personal and purposeful, rooted in obedience and reverence.

“Then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him”
God is a speaking God. He initiates conversation and makes His will known to His servant.

“From off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony”
The mercy seat represents atonement and covenant. God’s voice comes from the place where sin is covered and relationship is restored.

“From between the two cherubims”
This emphasizes God’s holiness and kingship. The cherubim symbolize His throne and majesty.

“And he spake unto him”
The repetition underscores clarity and certainty. God truly spoke—this was not imagination or inference.

The verse declares that God communicates with His people from a place of mercy, holiness, and covenant faithfulness.

Why This Verse Matters

Numbers 7:89 communicates enduring truths:

God Dwells Among His People – He is present, not distant.

God Speaks with Clarity – His guidance is intentional and personal.

Mercy Is Central to Relationship – God’s voice comes from the place of atonement.

The verse teaches that true guidance flows from meeting God where He has chosen to reveal Himself.

Application for Today

Numbers 7:89 encourages believers to seek God’s presence with reverence and expectation. While the tabernacle system has been fulfilled in Christ, the principle remains: God desires to speak with His people. Today, believers approach God through Jesus Christ, our true mercy seat (cf. Romans 3:25).

For believers today, this verse calls for intentional time in God’s presence, attentiveness to His Word, and confidence that He still speaks through Scripture and by His Spirit. As Hebrews 4:16 declares, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” God’s voice is still heard where mercy and obedience meet.
