Numbers 23:20

Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.

Reflection

Numbers 23:20 comes from the words of Balaam, the prophet called to curse Israel, yet compelled by God to bless instead. This verse highlights the unchangeable power of God’s word. Once He speaks blessing or judgment according to His will, no human force can reverse it. Even someone intending harm, like Balaam, becomes an instrument of God’s purposes.

The verse underscores God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. His promises and declarations are steadfast, and they operate independently of human desire or intervention. Blessing from God is both authoritative and enduring, emphasizing the reliability of His covenant.

What God Is Teaching

“I have received commandment to bless”
God’s instructions are binding, even on those who do not fully understand or agree. Blessing is not arbitrary; it is deliberate and purposeful.

“And he hath blessed”
The act of blessing has been completed. God’s will has been fulfilled, demonstrating that divine action cannot be thwarted by human intention.

“And I cannot reverse it”
No human power can undo what God has decreed. This reflects both His absolute sovereignty and the permanence of His word. God’s promises are dependable and final.

Why This Verse Matters

Numbers 23:20 conveys key spiritual truths:

  • God’s Word Is Irrevocable – His blessings and promises cannot be undone.
  • Divine Will Prevails Over Human Intent – Even those with contrary purposes must yield to God’s plan.
  • Trust in God’s Faithfulness – Believers can rely on God’s word as firm and certain.

This verse provides assurance that God’s promises are secure, regardless of circumstances or human opposition.

Application for Today

For believers today, Numbers 23:20 offers confidence in the power and reliability of God’s word. When God blesses, His blessing cannot be canceled by others’ opposition, circumstances, or our own doubts.

It encourages patience and trust, knowing that God’s plans and promises are unstoppable and complete. Even when facing opposition or uncertainty, believers can stand firm, confident that God’s favor and faithfulness will endure.

This verse also reminds us to align our actions with God’s blessing, recognizing that living under His favor comes with obedience and trust in His unchanging purpose.
