Mark 3:15

And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

Reflection

Mark 3:15 occurs within Jesus’ calling and commissioning of the Twelve, where He not only appoints them to be with Him, but also entrusts them with authority. This verse highlights that the power given to the disciples is not symbolic or theoretical; it is active and tangible. Healing sicknesses and casting out devils demonstrate the inbreaking of God’s kingdom into human suffering and spiritual bondage.

In Mark 3:15, authority flows directly from relationship. The disciples receive power because they have been called by Jesus and sent under His name. This authority reflects Jesus’ own ministry, where compassion and confrontation operate together—compassion toward the afflicted and confrontation toward forces that oppose God’s reign. Similar authority is later reaffirmed in Luke 9:1, where Jesus gives His disciples power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases.

This verse also reveals that the kingdom of God is not merely a message to be heard, but a reality to be experienced. Healing and deliverance serve as signs that God’s rule is present and active.

What the Verse Declares

“To have power”
The authority comes from Christ, not human ability. It is delegated power, exercised in dependence on Him.

“To heal sicknesses”
God’s compassion addresses physical suffering. Healing reflects His desire to restore what is broken.

“And to cast out devils”
Spiritual authority confronts evil directly. Deliverance demonstrates that darkness yields to Christ’s rule.

Mark 3:15 declares that those sent by Jesus are empowered to participate in His restoring work.

Why This Verse Matters

Mark 3:15 communicates several enduring truths:

Authority Comes From Christ – Spiritual power is received, not self-generated.
The Gospel Is Both Proclaimed and Demonstrated – Healing and deliverance confirm the message of the kingdom.
God Cares for the Whole Person – Physical and spiritual needs are addressed together.
The Kingdom Advances Through Obedient Servants – God works through those who respond to His call, as seen again in Mark 16:17–18.

This verse reminds believers that Christ’s mission includes restoration, freedom, and victory over evil.

Application for Today

For believers today, Mark 3:15 invites reflection on both identity and responsibility. While not all are called to the same expressions of ministry, all believers are called to operate under Christ’s authority and compassion. The verse challenges Christians to trust in God’s power rather than human strength when confronting suffering and spiritual opposition.

This passage also encourages believers to remain rooted in relationship with Christ, recognizing that authority flows from being with Him before being sent by Him (Mark 3:14). Ultimately, Mark 3:15 reminds believers that participation in God’s work is not passive—those called by Christ are empowered to reflect His healing, freeing presence in the world.
