Luke 6:47

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

Reflection

This verse sets the foundation for authentic discipleship. Jesus Christ describes faith not as a single act, but as a lived sequence—coming, hearing, and doing. The order matters. Nearness leads to listening; listening demands response. Jesus prepares His listeners for a revealing comparison that will distinguish appearance from reality.

What Jesus Is Teaching

  • “Whosoever cometh to me”
The invitation is open. Relationship begins with approach—choosing proximity to Christ rather than distance. Faith is personal before it is practical.
  • “And heareth my sayings”
Hearing implies attentiveness and receptivity. Jesus speaks of more than exposure to words; He means understanding shaped by trust.
  • “And doeth them”
Obedience completes the sequence. Truth received but not practiced remains incomplete. Doing is the evidence that hearing has taken root.
  • “I will shew you to whom he is like”
Jesus signals a forthcoming illustration that exposes outcomes. Lives reveal their foundations over time; obedience determines stability.

The verse establishes that discipleship is verified by action.

Why This Verse Matters

Luke 6:47 communicates enduring spiritual truths:

  1. Faith Begins with Relationship – Coming to Christ precedes obedience.
  2. Hearing Requires Response – Truth calls for action, not admiration.
  3. Obedience Reveals Foundation – What is practiced shapes what endures.

The verse warns against separating belief from behavior.

Application for Today

Luke 6:47 challenges believers to evaluate faith beyond intention or agreement. Following Christ is not defined by proximity alone, but by practice shaped by His words.

For believers today, this verse is an invitation to integrated faith. Coming to Jesus invites transformation; hearing His words calls for obedience. When belief moves into action, life gains stability that endures testing. Christ still shows what such a life is like—and it is built to last.
