Joshua 6:17

And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

Reflection

Joshua 6:17 records a moment of God’s decisive judgment and mercy: “And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.” This verse illustrates the dual reality of God’s justice and grace. The city of Jericho faced judgment because of its persistent wickedness, yet Rahab received mercy because of her faith and courageous obedience.

It reminds us that God’s favor is not based on past status or reputation but on faith and actions aligned with His will. Rahab’s story shows that even those marginalized or judged by society can receive salvation when they trust God and act faithfully.

What This Verse Expresses

Divine Justice
The city’s destruction highlights that persistent sin and opposition to God have consequences.

Mercy and Reward for Faith
Rahab’s preservation demonstrates that God honors courage, faith, and obedience, even in unexpected people.

God’s Sovereignty in Life and Death
This verse reminds us that God controls outcomes, executing justice and extending grace according to His perfect knowledge and purpose.

Why This Verse Matters

Joshua 6:17 teaches us that:

  • God is Just – Sin and rebellion are taken seriously, and wrongdoing has consequences.
  • Faith and Courage are Rewarded – God notices and honors those who act in alignment with His will.
  • God Sees Beyond Social Standing – Mercy and favor are available to all who trust Him, regardless of past reputation.

Application for Today

This verse encourages believers to:

  1. Take God’s commands and standards seriously, understanding the consequences of disobedience.
  2. Exercise courage and faith, knowing that God notices and rewards obedience even in risky circumstances.
  3. Recognize that God’s mercy is available to anyone willing to trust Him and act faithfully, regardless of background or past life.

Joshua 6:17 reminds us that God’s justice and mercy coexist. While wrongdoing is not overlooked, faith, obedience, and courage are recognized and rewarded, showing that His plan extends both judgment and salvation according to His righteous will.
