Isaiah 48:16

Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

Reflection

Isaiah 48:16 reveals the eternal presence and authority of God in the work of salvation and prophecy. Here, the speaker—interpreted in Christian understanding as a messianic reference to Christ—emphasizes that God’s plan has never been hidden. From the beginning of time, God has been active, speaking and guiding His creation. The verse also introduces the cooperative work of the Lord and His Spirit in sending the messenger, highlighting the unity within the Godhead in accomplishing divine purposes. It underscores that God’s revelations are deliberate, purposeful, and transparent for those willing to listen.

This verse invites believers to recognize God’s eternal presence and the continuity of His plan throughout history.

What the Verse Declares

“Come ye near unto me, hear ye this”
An invitation to listen attentively, showing the importance of receiving God’s message directly.

“I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I”
God’s purposes and words are eternal, unhidden, and consistent. He is present throughout history, orchestrating events according to His plan.

“And now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me”
The sending involves both God and His Spirit, revealing divine collaboration and authority in delivering the message. This also prefigures the New Testament understanding of Christ’s mission being empowered by the Spirit (cf. Luke 4:18).

The verse declares God’s transparency, sovereignty, and the purposeful sending of His messenger for the salvation and instruction of His people.

Why This Verse Matters

Isaiah 48:16 communicates enduring truths:

God’s Plan Is Eternal – His purposes are not reactionary but established from the beginning.

God’s Word Is Revealed – His messages are meant to be heard and understood, not hidden.

The Spirit Empowers God’s Mission – Divine initiative and power work together in accomplishing God’s will.

The verse teaches that God’s revelation is consistent, trustworthy, and intended for attentive hearts.

Application for Today

Isaiah 48:16 encourages believers to seek God’s guidance and listen carefully to His Word. It reassures that God’s plan is not a last-minute reaction to human circumstances but part of a deliberate, eternal design.

For modern believers, the verse calls for attentiveness to both Scripture and the Spirit’s leading, trusting that God’s mission is purposeful and empowered by His Spirit. As John 14:26 affirms, the Holy Spirit teaches and reminds believers of all God has spoken. Listening and responding to God’s eternal message fosters faith, obedience, and confidence in His unchanging plan.
