Hosea 9:14

Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

Reflection

Hosea 9:14 is one of the most jarring prayers in Scripture, revealing the depth of grief, judgment, and broken covenant between God and Israel. Hosea, speaking as God’s prophet, does not pray for blessing but for restraint—asking that life itself be withheld. This shocking language reflects the severity of Israel’s persistent rebellion and the devastating consequences of continued unfaithfulness. In context, the prayer is not born of cruelty, but of sorrow: a recognition that continued increase would only multiply suffering under judgment.

The verse confronts readers with the sobering reality that unchecked sin leads not only to loss, but to a reversal of blessing.

What the Verse Declares

“Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give?”
The question expresses anguish and resignation. Hosea stands at the point where ordinary blessing would no longer be mercy, revealing the seriousness of Israel’s spiritual condition.

“Give them a miscarrying womb”
Fruitfulness—normally a sign of God’s favor—is reversed. The imagery reflects judgment that halts growth, preventing future generations from inheriting judgment and destruction.

“And dry breasts”
Nurture and provision are removed. What should sustain life is absent, symbolizing the withdrawal of blessing due to covenant unfaithfulness.

The verse declares that persistent rebellion can lead to the removal of blessings once freely given.

Why This Verse Matters

Hosea 9:14 communicates enduring truths:

Sin Has Consequences – God’s patience does not eliminate accountability.

Blessing Can Be Withdrawn – Prosperity without repentance can deepen judgment.

God’s Judgment Is Measured, Not Random – Even severe language reflects purposeful restraint, not chaos.

The verse forces readers to wrestle with the cost of rejecting God’s covenant love.

Application for Today

Hosea 9:14 warns believers against presuming upon God’s grace while resisting repentance. It shows that there comes a point when continued increase, success, or growth without obedience becomes destructive rather than merciful.

For believers today, this verse calls for humility, repentance, and renewed faithfulness. As Hebrews 12:11 reminds us, “No chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” God’s desire is restoration, not destruction—but restoration requires a turning of the heart. Responding early to God’s correction preserves life, blessing, and future hope.
