Ezekiel 28:22

And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.

Reflection

This verse delivers a solemn declaration of divine opposition paired with an unexpected purpose: God’s glory. Speaking through Ezekiel, the LORD addresses Zidon (Sidon), a proud and influential city. Judgment is announced not as an end in itself, but as a means by which God’s holiness and authority will be unmistakably revealed.

What God Is Declaring

  • “Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon”
The opposition is direct and personal. God sets Himself against the city’s arrogance and corruption. When God is “against” a people, no alliance or strength can prevail.
  • “I will be glorified in the midst of thee”
God’s glory will be displayed publicly, not at a distance. Even in judgment, God asserts His sovereignty. The city becomes the stage upon which His holiness is revealed.
  • “They shall know that I am the LORD”
Knowledge of God here is experiential, not theoretical. Recognition comes through consequence—through seeing God act decisively and righteously.
  • “When I shall have executed judgments in her”
Judgment is described as an act carried out with purpose and completion. It is neither impulsive nor partial.
  • “And shall be sanctified in her”
God is sanctified—shown to be holy—through His actions. His justice separates Him from human pride and false gods, revealing His moral perfection.

The verse ties judgment to revelation, consequence to clarity.

Why This Verse Matters

Ezekiel 28:22 communicates enduring spiritual truths:

  1. God Opposes Pride and Corruption – No city or power is beyond accountability.
  2. Judgment Can Reveal God’s Holiness – God’s glory is shown through righteousness, not tolerance of evil.
  3. God’s Actions Lead to Recognition – When God acts, His identity becomes undeniable.

The verse shows that God’s holiness is made known even through severe mercy.

Application for Today

Ezekiel 28:22 challenges modern assumptions that God’s glory is displayed only through blessing. Scripture affirms that God is also glorified when justice is done and truth is upheld.

For believers today, this verse calls for reverence and humility. God’s holiness demands acknowledgment, whether through repentance or consequence. While judgment is sobering, its ultimate aim is revelation—that people may know the LORD as holy, sovereign, and just. The verse reminds us that God’s glory will be made known, and wisdom lies in recognizing it willingly rather than resisting it.
