Exodus 7:15

Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river’s brink against he come; and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.

Reflection

Exodus 7:15 introduces the dramatic confrontation between God, through Moses, and Pharaoh. This verse sets the stage for the first of the plagues, emphasizing obedience, timing, and the display of God’s power. Moses is instructed to meet Pharaoh “in the morning” at the river, showing that God’s plans unfold with precise timing and divine intention. The river, a source of life and sustenance for Egypt, becomes the stage for God’s judgment, demonstrating that no earthly resource or authority is beyond His control.

The rod, already turned into a serpent, symbolizes God’s authority and ability to confront powers that seem threatening. In Exodus 7:15, it is not Moses’ personal power that matters, but the power of God revealed through him. This underscores the recurring biblical theme that human instruments become channels of divine action when submitted to God’s direction (see also Exodus 14:16, where Moses stretches out the rod to part the Red Sea).

The verse teaches that God orchestrates events with intentionality, using ordinary means—like a shepherd’s rod—placed in the hands of the obedient to display His glory and accomplish His purposes.

What the Verse Declares

“Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning”
Obedience to God’s timing is crucial. God’s plans unfold in His appointed hours, not ours.

“Lo, he goeth out unto the water”
God chooses the place and moment where His power will be revealed. Even ordinary routines become moments for divine demonstration.

“Thou shalt stand by the river’s brink”
Moses is positioned to witness God’s work and act as the visible agent of His authority.

“And the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand”
The rod symbolizes God’s power and serves as the instrument through which He asserts His sovereignty over Pharaoh and Egypt.

Exodus 7:15 declares that God works through obedient vessels, using precise timing and symbolic acts to reveal His authority.

Why This Verse Matters

Exodus 7:15 teaches several enduring truths:

God’s Power Is Revealed Through Obedience – Human instruments matter only when submitted to God’s will.
God’s Timing Is Perfect – The moment of action is determined by divine wisdom.
Ordinary Things Can Display God’s Glory – A simple rod or a river becomes the stage for supernatural demonstration.
God Confronts False Authority – Pharaoh’s routine and perceived power are nothing before the sovereignty of God.

This verse reminds believers that God’s plans are purposeful, precise, and often unfold in ways that reveal His supremacy over worldly powers.

Application for Today

For believers today, Exodus 7:15 encourages trust in God’s timing and submission to His direction. Even when the circumstances seem ordinary or routine, God may be orchestrating moments of significant impact through our obedience.

This verse also reminds believers that spiritual authority is rooted in God, not in personal ability. Like Moses with the rod, Christians today are called to participate in God’s work faithfully, trusting that He will accomplish His purposes through seemingly ordinary means. Exodus 7:15 ultimately teaches that God’s sovereignty, revealed through obedience and faithful action, is both powerful and redemptive.
