Exodus 38:1

And he made the altar of burnt offering of shittim wood: five cubits was the length thereof, and five cubits the breadth thereof; it was foursquare; and three cubits the height thereof.

Reflection

This verse records the construction of the altar where approach to God would be marked by sacrifice. Crafted under the direction of Bezalel, the altar of burnt offering stands as the first structure encountered in the tabernacle courtyard. Before entering deeper into sacred space, worship begins here—where offering, surrender, and atonement meet obedience.

What the Verse Describes

  • “He made the altar of burnt offering”
The altar is central to Israel’s worship. Burnt offerings symbolize complete dedication—an offering wholly given to God. This altar represents access to God through obedience and sacrifice.
  • “Of shittim wood”
Shittim (acacia) wood is durable and resistant to decay, suited for the wilderness journey. What supports worship must endure, reflecting God’s concern for permanence even in temporary dwelling.
  • “Five cubits… five cubits… foursquare”
The altar’s square design emphasizes balance, order, and stability. God’s instructions are precise, showing that worship is not left to improvisation.
  • “Three cubits the height thereof”
The height ensures visibility and separation. Sacrifice is not hidden—it is lifted up, acknowledging that approach to God is deliberate and public.

The verse highlights worship structured by God’s design rather than human preference.

Why This Verse Matters

Exodus 38:1 communicates enduring spiritual truths:

  1. Access to God Begins with Surrender – Worship starts at the altar.
  2. God Values Order in Devotion – Measurements reflect intentional obedience.
  3. Sacrifice Is Central to Relationship – Approach to God involves giving, not taking.

The verse shows that reverence is built into the very structure of worship.

Application for Today

Exodus 38:1 reminds believers that relationship with God begins with humility and offering. While the form of worship has changed, the principle remains: approach God with reverence, obedience, and surrender.

For believers today, this verse encourages thoughtful devotion rather than casual approach. God invites worship, but He also defines it. When worship is shaped by obedience and grounded in surrender, it becomes a place of genuine encounter—where God meets His people and faith is refined.
