Exodus 18:7

And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

Reflection
This verse offers a quiet but meaningful glimpse into the character of Moses at the height of his leadership. Though he stands as God’s chosen leader over Israel, Moses approaches his father-in-law Jethro with humility, honor, and warmth. Authority has not diminished his respect for family or proper regard for others.

The scene is relational rather than dramatic. Before counsel is given or matters of leadership are discussed, there is honor, affection, and genuine concern for well-being. The verse reminds readers that strong leadership does not neglect courtesy, and spiritual authority does not replace human humility.

What This Verse Reveals
“Moses went out to meet his father in law”
Moses initiates the meeting, showing respect and intentionality. Honor is expressed through action, not assumption.
“And did obeisance, and kissed him”
These gestures reflect humility and affection. Despite Moses’ role, he honors Jethro as an elder and family member.
“They asked each other of their welfare”
Leadership does not erase personal care. Mutual concern reflects relational health and sincere connection.
“And they came into the tent”
The setting shifts from public greeting to private conversation, preparing the way for wisdom and counsel to follow.

Why This Verse Matters
Exodus 18:7 highlights important principles:

Humility Strengthens Leadership – True authority is marked by respect and gentleness.
Honor Precedes Wisdom – Relational honor creates space for guidance and growth.
Faith Is Lived in Everyday Interactions – God’s people reflect Him not only in miracles, but in manners.

This verse shows that godliness is often revealed in simple, relational moments.

Application for Today
Exodus 18:7 encourages believers to practice humility and honor in daily relationships. Respect for family, elders, and others is not diminished by position or success. Instead, it is affirmed by it.

This verse invites reflection on how we greet others, how we listen, and how we value relationship over status. When humility leads the way, wisdom can follow—and God is honored through both leadership and love.
