Deuteronomy 32:6

Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?

Reflection

Deuteronomy 32:6 is part of Moses’ song, a rebuke to Israel for forgetting God’s faithfulness. The verse confronts the people for their ingratitude and spiritual short-sightedness, contrasting human folly with divine care. God is presented as a loving Father—creator, redeemer, and sustainer—who has acted faithfully on behalf of His people. The rhetorical questions challenge Israel to recognize their dependence on God and to respond with obedience and reverence.

This verse reminds readers that God’s generosity, protection, and guidance call for gratitude, loyalty, and wise living.

What the Verse Declares

“Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise?”
The verse begins with a sharp rebuke. To “requite” God improperly—through rebellion or forgetfulness—is foolish because it fails to acknowledge His care and authority.

“Is not he thy father that hath bought thee?”
God’s relationship with Israel is both paternal and redemptive. He has “bought” them, pointing to deliverance from slavery in Egypt, and demonstrates His protective, guiding nature.

“Hath he not made thee, and established thee?”
God is both Creator and Sustainer. Israel’s existence and national identity are gifts from Him, emphasizing that life and blessing are rooted in divine provision.

The verse underscores that recognizing God’s role as Father, Redeemer, and Creator is foundational to faithfulness and wisdom.

Why This Verse Matters

Deuteronomy 32:6 communicates enduring truths:

God Deserves Our Gratitude – Forgetting His works is foolish and unwise.

God Is Both Redeemer and Creator – His authority and care flow from both roles.

Wisdom Is Found in Recognizing God’s Provision – Spiritual insight comes from acknowledging dependence on Him.

The verse reminds believers that faithfulness begins with awareness of God’s past actions and ongoing care.

Application for Today

Deuteronomy 32:6 challenges believers to examine their gratitude and loyalty toward God. Forgetfulness of His goodness, or taking His blessings for granted, reflects spiritual folly.

For believers today, the verse calls for conscious remembrance of God’s acts of salvation, provision, and guidance. Like Psalm 103:2 exhorts, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,” faithfulness arises from remembering who God is and what He has done. Recognizing God as Father, Redeemer, and Sustainer fosters humility, gratitude, and wise living in alignment with His will.
