Deuteronomy 1:38

But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

Reflection

Deuteronomy 1:38 highlights God’s choice and encouragement in leadership. Here, Moses is told that he will not enter the Promised Land, but Joshua, who has faithfully stood alongside him, will lead Israel into their inheritance. God’s words emphasize both the responsibility and privilege of leadership, as well as the importance of encouragement from those around the leader. Joshua’s role is not simply administrative; he is called to guide the people faithfully so that God’s promises are fulfilled. The verse underscores God’s sovereign plan and the need for both leadership and support within His purposes.

This verse reminds readers that God prepares leaders and calls others to strengthen, support, and encourage them in carrying out His work.

What the Verse Declares

“But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee”
Joshua is recognized for his faithful presence and readiness to serve. He has proven his character and commitment to God’s mission.

“He shall go in thither”
God confirms that Joshua will enter the Promised Land and fulfill the task Moses cannot. The promise highlights God’s faithfulness in completing what He begins through His appointed leaders.

“Encourage him”
Support and encouragement from others are vital for those carrying God’s responsibilities. Moses is instructed to strengthen Joshua, showing that leadership in God’s plan is often collaborative.

“For he shall cause Israel to inherit it”
The goal is clear: Joshua’s leadership ensures that God’s promise to Israel is realized. God’s plan relies on faithful execution and trust in His guidance.

The verse underscores that God’s plans involve both preparation of leaders and active support from those around them.

Why This Verse Matters

Deuteronomy 1:38 communicates enduring truths:

God Prepares and Appoints Leaders – Leadership is a calling grounded in faithfulness and character.

Encouragement Strengthens God’s Work – Support from others empowers leaders to fulfill their responsibilities.

God’s Promises Are Fulfilled Through Human Cooperation – Faithful action within God’s plan ensures His purposes come to pass.

The verse reminds believers that both leadership and encouragement are vital in accomplishing God’s will.

Application for Today

Deuteronomy 1:38 encourages believers to recognize and support those God calls to lead in His kingdom. Leadership is not solitary; encouragement, prayer, and backing from others are essential to fulfill God’s purposes.

For believers today, the verse invites reflection on both roles: as leaders called by God and as supporters of those He appoints. As Hebrews 10:24–25 exhorts, believers are called to “consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works, not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together,” showing that encouragement and mutual support strengthen God’s mission. By faithfully supporting and uplifting God’s leaders, believers participate in advancing His promises and purposes.
