A new scripture for you each day

  • About Us

1 John 5:15

And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Reflection

This verse offers quiet confidence rather than dramatic promise. Writing pastorally to strengthen assurance, John the Apostle grounds prayer in knowledge—if we know that he hear us. The certainty does not come from the intensity of asking, but from the character of the One who listens. Prayer, in this light, is not a gamble; it is a settled trust in a faithful God.

What Is Being Affirmed

  • “If we know that he hear us”
Knowing precedes asking. The assurance of being heard rests on relationship and alignment with God’s will (as established in the surrounding verses). Prayer is anchored in confidence that God is attentive, not distant.
  • “Whatsoever we ask”
The scope is broad, yet not careless. John writes within a context of asking according to God’s will. Requests shaped by that alignment carry assurance rather than uncertainty.
  • “We know that we have the petitions”
The language is present-tense confidence. This does not reduce prayer to immediate outcomes, but affirms that God’s response is already secured—whether through fulfillment, redirection, or timing that serves a greater good.
  • “That we desired of him”
Desire here is not mere impulse; it reflects longings formed by faith. As believers grow in trust and obedience, their desires increasingly mirror God’s purposes.

Why This Verse Matters

1 John 5:15 communicates enduring truths about prayer:

  1. Prayer Is Rooted in Relationship – Assurance flows from knowing God, not from technique.
  2. God’s Hearing Is the Foundation of Confidence – Being heard precedes receiving.
  3. Faith Trusts God’s Response – Possession of the answer is grounded in trust, not control.

This verse reinforces a theme central to the letter: believers can live with assurance—of salvation, of God’s presence, and of answered prayer.

Application for Today

1 John 5:15 invites believers to pray with settled trust rather than anxious repetition. It encourages confidence without presumption—confidence that God hears, and humility to accept His wisdom in responding.

For believers today, this verse reframes prayer as participation in God’s will rather than persuasion of God’s will. When trust replaces anxiety, prayer becomes a place of peace. Knowing that God hears allows the heart to rest, even before answers become visible.
